It is the intent of the Trinity Valley Cairn Terrier Club's Code of Ethics to provide education to the general public and membership, and protect the welfare of the Cairn Terrier. Members shall bear in mind that a Code of Ethics is more than a set of rules; it is a commitment to a higher standard of practice in owning and breeding Cairn Terriers.

As a member of the Trinity Valley Cairn terrier Club, I will:

1. abide by the Constitution and Bylaws of the Trinity  Valley Cairn Terrier Club and the American Kennel Club.

2. agree that indiscriminate breeding and/or breeding in large numbers sets a poor public example, which contributes to an overpopulation problem and leads to overall deterioration of the breed.

3. at all times display good sportsmanship and conduct myself in such a manner as to reflect credit upon the Club and the breed.

4. maintain and provide complete, accurate breeding records in accordance with the American Kennel Club rules and regulations and identification systems.

5. familiarize myself with the Cairn Terrier Standard and breed ONLY dogs and bitches of characteristic type, sound structure and temperament, and direct my efforts to producing dogs and bitches in conformity to the Cairn Terrier Standard.

6. breed no bitch before her second season, or eighteen months of age, nor breed a bitch on more than two consecutive seasons.

7. discontinue breeding Cairn Terriers which have produced one or more offspring with serious inherited defects detrimental to the animal's well being in each of two separate litters as a result of breeding with two different partners.

8. not undertake the breeding of a bitch unless prepared to keep the resulting puppies until each is suitably placed, nor offering a dog at stud unless similar assurances in writing are obtained from the owners of outside bitches.

9. offer no stud service to bitches; or accept stud services from dogs:

a. with no AKC registration papers or pedigree;

b. obtained from pet shops, catalog houses, puppy mills, trader’s villages or any other source inconsistent with a reasonable expectation of offspring that perpetuate or improve the breed ;

c. to owners who will not agree that all offspring from such a mating (who are not going to a show home) will be sold only on spay neuter contracts and with limited registration.

Should it be determined by the club’s Board of Directors , upon an official complaint according to the TVCTC Constitution, that any club member intentionally engaged in breeding practices described above, that member shall, at the discretion of the Board, be subject to procedures and sanctions, including expulsion, as described in Article VI (Discipline) of the club’s Constitution and Bylaws.

10. maintain all puppies and adults in a clean and healthy condition and environment, whether you own dogs or those placed in your care.

11. not sell any puppies until they are at least 10 weeks and preferably 12 weeks of age, nor sell any adult or puppies without appropriate inoculations and proof of those inoculations given to the new owner. In addition assure all purchasers are supplied with accurate and valid papers to include a four-generation pedigree, certificate, written health guarantee, inoculation records and suggestions for the care and feeding. State emphatically your willingness to have puppies that you have bred or sold returned to you regardless of age and state financial arrangements for return in advance.

12. require a spay/neuter contract with the sale of all non-show or non-breeding quality dogs, retain all papers until proof of the spay/neuter is furnished, or register as non-breeding stock (limited registration) any puppies or adults with known physical defects or which show definite departure from the Cairn Terrier Standard.

13. not engage in wholesaling, distributing or selling any Cairn Terrier to pet dealers, catalog houses or other commercial sources, nor supply any Cairn Terrier for raffles, lotteries or laboratory experimentation or indiscriminately offer stud service.

14. refrain from any activities that would not be in the best interest of the breed, purebred dog fancy, the Trinity Valley Cairn Terrier Club, the Cairn Terrier Club of America and the American Kennel Club.

15. agree to mentor, when appropriate, all new club members who I have sponsored.

16. assist the novice and educate the public to reflect credit to the sport of purebred dogs.

 17. accept lifetime responsibility for the welfare of the dogs I breed and be ready and willing to take back or re-home dogs of my breeding should the owner become unable to care  for these dogs.
